3. Project Summary: With the support of PEPFAR through CDC, EPHA has conducted the national study on Alcohol and substance abuse and its influence on HIV/AIDS. According to this study, the overall prevalence of alcohol consumption and khat chewing is high and it is believed to be progressively increasing. A significant proportion of the population, ranging from 15 to 60%, has sexual relationships with a non-spousal sexual partner. Promiscuity is common; with some 43% reporting multiple sexual partnerships ever. Following this study of alcohol and khat use, EPHA has been implementing advocacy activities on Alcohol and substance abuse in relation to HIV/AIDS.
